In 1969, the United States launched Apollo 12. the second crewed flight to land on the moon. Attached to the spacecraft was a tiny ceramic tile inscribed with work by artists John Chamberlain, Forrest Myers, David Novros, Claes Oldenburg, Robert Rauschenberg, and Andy Warhol. AIthough its exact location is impossible to confirm, this so-called "Moon Museum" is still on the moon and orbiting the Earth today.
By combining NASA planetary data reporting on the position and phases of the moon and diary entries from one year of Andy Warhol's life (1983), this book extends a lifeline from Warhol's home in New York City to outer space. The text from each diary entry has been altered based on the phase percentage and position angle of the moon—and therefore those of the Moon Museum—at the time of writing.
To all the struggling artists out there hoping for gallery representation and vying for a spot in a group show—dream bigger! Shoot for the moon!
